How to stylishly protect your card making bling

Godby (God-be) with Us Stamper BEVERLY GASIOR made this handmade card to congratulate me on achieving Founders Circle.  Earlier she had shared with me that she purchased a crimper to make her own corrugated card stock to protect the card making bling on her handmade cards.  She did just that very thing so her Flower Brads were delivered without any chips and the no holes in the envelope.

You can see on the card stock where the brads are pressed into the card stock.

Crimped card stock

Because the card stock had not been punctured, the card envelope was in great shape too.

Liking the idea of the extra padding the crimped card stock provided, I started pondering about other ways to get the same effect if one did not own a crimper.  Embossing, of course!  And, if you are a regular reader, you know how I like matchy-matchy.  How cool would it be if your embossed card stock used for padding coordinated with the embossing you used on your handmade card?

Stampin' Up! Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder

Just in case you thought the embossed polka dots would not offer the same amount of protection as the crimped card stock, I chose another embossing folder with deep grooves.

Stampin' Up! Chevron Embossing Folder

Beverly has an excellent idea here.  Crimped or embossed card stock will certainly add more protection for your card making bling than only the envelope or piece of paper inside the envelope.  The piece of paper has proven in my experiments to do quite well, but an embossed piece of card stock, especially coordinating, will do an even better job.

Crimpers are easily available in any craft store.  If you would like to purchase any Stampin’ Up! Embossing Folders, they are available to order now in my online store www.shopwithshelly.com.

Card making is now even easier for Deanna with her new wall-mount ribbon holder

Card making allows us to escape and be creative.  Many have told me it is a stress reliever.  When your card making supplies are not organized, it can keep you from enjoying paper crafting to its fullest.  Godby with Us Stamper DEANNA WETZ shared the new wall-mount ribbon holder she made.

Deanna_Wetz_Ribbon_Holder

Deanna wrote:  "Shelly I needed a ribbon holder so I could get them on the wall. I used some leftover slates from my window blinds, hot glued the slates, used heavy cardboard for the ends and command strips to hang it on the wall. Pretty cool."

Deanna_Wetz_Ribbon_Holder_on_wall

What I particularly like about Deanna's holder is that the rolls of ribbon are easy to access.  Once I read somewhere to use a doll rod to store your ribbon.  It looked nice handing there, but what a pain it was to use the ribbon.  I could not grab a roll without taking off all the ones before it.  That plan turned out to be too inefficient.

Deanna_Wetz_Ribbon_Holders_on_wall

We not only get to see Deanna's ribbon holders hanging on the wall, we get a beautiful glimpse into her crafting area.  I like how so much is within easy reach.  With an organized craft room like this, you will be able much easier into your love of card making.

How have you organized your crafting room or area?  We would love to see pictures!  Email your craft room organization pictures to shelly@stampingsmiles.com

“How’s it hangin’?” asks the upside down owl made with the Stampin’ Up! Owl Builder Punch.  Godby (God-be) With Us Stamper MELISSA WELCH sent her handmade card to me for our World Card Making Day on my Stamping Smiles page on Facebook.

What do you do when you do not have the perfect words?  Write them in yourself.   How’s it Hangin’ easily fit with the edges of the Stampin’ Up! Word Window Punch.  Then Melissa dressed it up by layering it on the Stampin’ Up! Modern Label Punch.

Melissa_Welch_WCMD_closeupJPG

Speaking of dressed up, take a gander at the owl’s vest.  It leaves little doubt this owl is a girl owl.   It did not take much of Melissa’s Designer Series Paper to add an inspiring touch to her hand made card.

The branch the girl owl is hanging from was die-cut from the Stampin’ Up! Little Leaves Sizzlits Die in a Big Shot Die-Cut Machine.  Melissa added three to create a full looking branches.  Die-cut images are not just attractive, but they are quick to make saving you time for more card making or another leisure activity.

I’m sure you will not be surprised to learn this card received a lot of great comments.  Immediately upon opening the envelope, it put a smile on my face.  Then when shared for World Card Making Day, the smiles continued.  A big, inky hug for Melissa.  I love getting pretty mail!

My Spice Cake fabric flower is layered onto a 2-3/8" punched Soft Suede Card Stock scallop circle.  The scallop circle is layered onto a 3" die-cut Pool Party Card Stock circle.  And, all that is layered onto the large Soft Suede Card Stock circle from the Sizzix Bigz Scallop Circle #2 Die.  That is one big flower!

Take a gander at the beautiful, sheer ribbon.  It is the 1/2" Pool Party Seam Binding Ribbon now available in the 2012 Stampin' Up! Occasions Mini Catalog.  It is so soft, ties easily and drapes beautifully.

The pearl in the center of the Pool Party Seam Binding bow is an 8mm self-adhesive half-pearl from the Large Pearl Basic Jewels, also available from the limited-edition 2012 Stampin' Up! Occasions Mini Catalog.  Isn't that a pretty touch?

My "I'm praying for you" greeting is from the Stampin' Up! Blessings from Heaven stamp set.  The set of greetings includes a sympathy, encouragement, friend and more sayings.  Very nice.

Bordering on Romance stamp set, Twitterpated Designer Fabric, Blushing Bride 3/8" Pleated Satin Ribbon, Twitterpated Designer Series Paper and Large Pearl Basic Jewels are all items found in the new 2012 Stampin' Up! Occasions Mini Catalog.  Do you think I was having fun playing with my new toys?  Wait, this is my job, so I guess that makes them tools.  Either way, I get to play with stamps!

Take a look at my fabric flower.  Godby With Us Stamper Carole Carr talked me through how to make one.  Turned out nice, didn't it?  The center did not need to be covered, but I like the added touch of the Large Basic Pearl Jewel in the center of it.

Twitterpated_Fabric_Flower

My fabric flower is sitting in the middle of one the stamped images from the Bordering on Romance stamp set.  I watercolored the leaves and flowers with coordinating Blushing Bride and Pear Pizzazz Classic Ink with my ever trusted Aqua Painter.  Love the Aqua Painter.  The flow and control of water makes watercoloring not just a pleasure but a passion.

Scallop_Trim_Border_Punch_Border

My Twitterpated fabric flower needed an equally elegant layer.  I used the Scallop Trim Corner and Scallop Trim Border Punch to make my lovely frame.   Then all layered onto the shell like Blushing Bride pattern from the Twitterpated Designer Series Paper.  So pretty and fitting.

Blessings_from_Heave

For my finishing touch, I used the oh so pretty Blushing Bride Pleated Ribbon.  It is securely adhered to the bottom of my card with a line of Crystal Effects.  That ribbon isn't going anywhere!

Stampin’ Up! Christmas Lodge & The Sounding Joy Handmade Christmas Greeting Card

My handmade Christmas greeting card rings out "Let the Earth Receive Her King", the second line in the Christmas carole "Joy to the World".  The Christmas greeting is nestled in with the pretty birds on the pine bough from the Stampin' Up! Christmas Lodge stamp set.

Christmas_Lodge_and_The_Sounding_Joy

Do you know the difference between a Christmas carole and a Christmas song?  Until recently, I never gave it any thought and assumed they were the same thing.  If my resource, Jay Leno on the Tonight Show, is correct, a Christmas carole is about the birth of Christ, such as "Joy to the World".  As I'm writing this post, "Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas" is playing.  That would be a Christmas song.  I'm glad to now know the difference.  Makes sense given a bit of thought.

The beautiful script greeting "Let the Earth Receive Her King" on my card is from the limited-edition The Sounding Joy stamp set from the 2011 Stampin' Up! Holiday Mini CatalogThe Sounding Joy (greeting) and Christmas Lodge (birds) are available to order only until January 3, 2012.

The pretty background paper is another limited-edition item from the 2011 Stampin' Up! Holiday Mini Catalog.  It s the Holly Berry Bouquet Specialty Designer Series Paper.  There are 12 double-sided sheets with a total of 12 different patterns.  The cool thing about the double-sided background paper is that if you don't particularly care for one side, you will most likely like the other.  Like The Sounding Joy and Christmas Lodge, the Holly Berry Bouquet Specialty Paper is only available until January 3, 2012.

The colors in the Holly Berry Bouquet Specialty Designer Series Paper are Chocolate Chip, Real Red, Cherry Cobbler, Wild Wasabi, So Saffron and Very Vanilla.

Handmade Christmas Card: I Dig You for Christmas

When you think of a bulldozer, dump truck and excavator, do you think handmade Christmas card?  Godby With Us Stamper, Angela Christie, did.   Angela made an adorable Christmas card with the Stampin' Up! I Dig You stamp set.  Have a look.

Angela_Christie

The dump truck has a big load of Christmas presents.  What a fun haul!  The I Dig You stamp set also includes some coal and animals to put in the dump truck.  Angela's little boy just loves this stamp set.  I'm sure he helped her pick it out of the 2011-2012 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog.

When making her Christmas cards with the I Dig You stamp set, what Angela thought was a stamping mistake turned out to be a stamping technique.  She wasn't happy with the stamped presents and attempted to stamp directly over it for a deeper color.  She missed.  But, what a lovely miss!  Now it looks like there a lot of presents!  And, the lighter color stamped image gives the illusion of depth, that the presents in the back are further away.   Images in the distance are not as deep or bright as they are closer.

Do you learn from your stamping mistakes?  When you are trying to achieve a new look, instead of getting frustrated with not getting the look you desired, store the results in the back of your mind for another time.  One day you very well find it to come in handy.    Angela learned how to have a dump truck loaded with presents.  The same technique can be used to create a forest.  My Christmas Lodge Christmas card demonstrates this.

Do you enjoy learning new stamping tips, tricks and techniques?  Every month I personally write three stamping articles exclusive to my mailing list subscribers.  And, it is absolutely free.  How do you get it?  It is as easy as putting in your name and email address in the form below.

Not only will you receive my exclusive stamping articles, but also the current Stampin' Up! specials, any specials I may have and my class schedule, classes in the mail and online classes.
